Fungi Digests Woods 곰팡이는 나무를 소화한다

The space feels like my body, along the white walls and exposed steel ceiling. Through transparent windows and the cement floor, where sound lingers, the body connects to the air and light of the space. Two long canvasses cross the room. They start from one wall and reach the other adjacent wall, one white, one dark. The white one is above, like the day, and the dark one is below, like the night. The canvas becomes a wall that moves freely. The colors of green, blue, and graphite become the wind on the fragile fabric. Traces of charcoal; soft and harsh, then soft again. How did the body make the marks move? The white threads used to truss meat create a grid pattern over the cloth and charcoal marks. If the cloth is soft flesh, the white threads are hard as bone. Following the turbulent movement of the bones making their way through the flesh, the body whispers. White ribs bridge the gap between day and night. The loose bones made during the day fall downward into the solid night. The day recovers and builds into the night as I dream about tomorrow. Through the gap in the ribs, I peek into the corner of the room where a video of a faded story is playing. Three women are walking continuously through a green forest. The book* I read yesterday said the following about fungi: “Yet fungal eating is often generous: It makes worlds for others. This is because fungi have extracellular digestion. They excrete digestive acids outside their bodies to break down their food into nutrients. It’s as if they had everted stomachs, digesting food outside instead of inside their bodies. Nutrients are then absorbed into their cells, allowing the fungal body to grow—but also other species’ bodies.” I look at the molding meat, think about wanting to be a forest, and begin extracellular digestion. The threads that come out of my body woven so noisily into each other. I witness the birth of tenderness from chaos. The walls slowly shed their sense of alienation and life began to sprout. 어떤 방은 나의 몸같이 느껴지기도 한다 흰 벽과 철골이 드러난 천장을 따라 투명한 창과 소리가 머무는 시멘트 바닥을 타고 몸은 공간의 공기와 빛 속으로 접속한다 기다란 두 캔버스 천이 공간을 가로지른다 한쪽 벽에서 출발해 인접한 다른 벽으로 도달한다 하나는 희고 하나는 어둡다 흰 것은 낮처럼 위에 어두운 것은 밤처럼 아래에 있다 천은 자유로이 움직일 수 있는 벽이 된다 초록과 파랑과 흑연의 색은 연약한 천 위에서 바람이 되었다 부드럽다가 거세다가 다시 부드러워지던 목탄의 흔적이다 그것을 칠하던 몸은 어떻게 움직였을까 고기를 감싸는데 사용되는 흰 실들이 천과 목탄의 흔적 위로 얼기설기 격자무늬를 만든다 천이 부드러운 몸이라면 흰 실들은 뼈처럼 단단하다 살을 뚫고 길을 만드는 뼈의 소란한 움직임을 따라 몸은 함께 속삭였다 낮과 밤 사이를 흰 갈비뼈들이 잇고 있다 낮에 만들어진 성긴 뼈들은 아래로 떨어져 튼튼한 밤으로 진입한다 낮은 밤으로 회복하며 쌓여간다 내일을 기대하는 이유이다 갈비뼈 틈새를 통해 방의 구석을 엿보았다 그곳에는 이야기가 희미해진 영상이 재생되고 있다 세 여성이 초록 숲속을 하염없이 걷고 있다 어제 읽은 책에서는 곰팡이에 대해 이렇게 말했다: 곰팡이의 섭식은 너그러워서 다른 이들을 위한 세계를 만든다. 이것은 곰팡이가 세포외 소화를 하기 때문이다. 곰팡이는 소화를 돕는 산을 체외로 배출해 먹이를 영양분으로 분해한다. 마치 위를 밖으로 뒤집어서 몸 안이 아니라 몸 밖에서 음식을 소화하는 것과 같다. 영양분은 그 후 세포에 흡수되어 곰팡이의 몸뿐 아니라 다른 생물종의 몸도 자라게 한다.* 나는 곰팡이가 핀 고기를 보며 숲이 되고 싶다고 생각하다 세포외 소화를 시작한다 나의 몸에서 나온 실들이 서로에게 요란하게 엮이었다 나는 소란에서 부드러움이 태어나는 순간을 목격한다 벽은 서서히 소외를 잊어가고 장소에서는 생명이 자라기 시작한다 잔디 소리를 듣는다 * 애나 칭의 책『세계 끝의 버섯』(현실문화연구)에서 저자의 허락을 받아 가져온 문장들이다.
