Do You Need An Umbrella 엄마, 우산 필요해?

1 I stepped on a thumb tack while playing alone in my room. Mom was working in another room. Without making any noise I quickly sat down on my bed. I flipped my foot to see the bottom, then pulled out the thumb tack. Dark blood slowly rose from the sole of the foot and formed a pool that grew larger and larger. I maintained my silence. Tears ran from my eyes but my hands covered my mouth. 2 Grandmother took my hands and gently stroked them. She says my hands are pretty like princess’. She says her hands are all worn out by the hard work. Since she uses a dialect, I don't understand her sentence properly. I ask her the meanings several times. She repeats her words over and over again with no frustration, as if there's nothing wrong with me not understanding what she's saying. My aunt, who well understands her mother’s words, delivers her mother’s story to me as if that is her role. 3 Going out to a wide field early in the morning to cut grass for cattle was one of the many tasks that was given to my grandmother when she was little. The sickle was sharp, so it wasn’t so hard to cut her hands. Grandmother said that she lost her parents during the war and grew up working at a relative's house since she was six. Even when blood dripped in the green green field, she had no mother or father. 4 My aunt said that she was walking alone in her dream. Then she came across a white bridge. In the middle of the bridge, a snake was staring at her, standing still with its head upright. Aunt cuts the body of the snake with a sword. Blue blood soared sharply into the sky. Mom asked her how that felt like. 5 Mom said she sometimes suddenly sees a knife. Then she sees a scene where a Japanese warrior's long sword cuts a stomach diagonally. Her stomach feels tingling and her feet falls down to an endless fall. Mom is afraid of knives lying down without being in use. She never tells me why. 6 Grandfather’s body was shrouded with a white cloth starting from his neck to his feet. When grandfather ended his own life without telling anyone, none of his four children cried at the unexpected funeral except my aunt. Only aunt kept crying. 7 Mom said that stepping on the ground with bare feet brings relief. She had to run out of the house in the middle of the night when her father, who was a career soldier, came home drunk and started to beat his family. There was no time to put shoes on. She said that the heat of her barefeet hitting the cold ground meant it shouldn't hurt anymore. Mom always tells me she loves walking barefoot.

1 방에서 혼자 놀다 압정을 밟았다. 엄마는 옆방에서 일을 하고 있었다. 아무 소리도 내지 않으려 노력하며 침대에 걸터앉아 발을 뒤집어 압정을 뽑았다. 발바닥에서 검붉은 피가 천천히 올라와 점점 더 커다란 웅덩이를 이루었다. 눈물이 났고 나의 손은 소리를 막기 위해 입을 가렸다. 2 할머니는 나의 손을 끌어다 잡아 손등을 쓰다듬으며 손이 공주님처럼 예쁘다고 했다. 할머니는 당신의 손이 고된 일을 너무 많이 해 못나다고 했다. 할머니는 사투리를 쓰시기 때문에 나는 할머니의 말을 다 이해하지 못하고 할머니께 재차 하시는 말씀이 무슨 뜻인지를 묻는다. 그러면 할머니는 내가 당신의 언어를 이해하지 못하는 게 당연하다는 듯이 몇 번이고 같은 말을 되풀이 한다. 자신의 엄마의 말을 모두 이해하는 나의 이모는, 마치 그게 본인의 역할인양, 할머니의 이야기를 번역해 전달한다. 두 손이 꼭 잡힌 채로 할머니의 이야기를 들었다. 3 소 먹일 풀을 베러 아침 일찍 너른 들로 나가 낫으로 풀을 베어 오는 게 어린 할머니의 많은 일 중 하나였다. 그 낫이 날카로워 손이 베이기도 부지기수였댔다. 할머니는 전쟁통에 부모를 잃고 고아가 되어 6살 때부터 친척집에서 일을 하며 자랐다고 했다. 그 푸른 들판에 피가 뚝뚝 떨어져도 할머니는 엄마 아빠가 없었다고 했다. 할머니는 피가 철철 나는 손을 움켜쥐고 혼자 그 들판을 다 걸어 집으로 가야 했다. 4 이모가 꿈에 혼자 길을 가고 있었다고 말했다. 그러다 흰 다리에 다다랐는데 뱀이 다리 중간에서 고개를 빳빳히 들어 자신을 응시하며 길을 막고 있었다고 했다. 이모가 칼로 뱀의 몸통을 베자 푸른 피가 선명하게 하늘로 솟구쳤다. 엄마는 이모에게 그때 기분이 어땠는지를 물었다. 5 엄마는 칼이 문득 분명해질 때가 있고, 그럴 땐 어김없이 일본 무사의 긴 칼이 배를 대각선으로 자르는 장면이 떠오른다고 했다. 그럼 배에 얼얼한 느낌이 든다고 했다. 그리고 그 순간 끝없는 낭떨어지로 떨어지는 발이 보인다고도 했다. 엄마는 부엌에 칼이 덩그러니 놓여있는 것을 싫어한다. 엄마는 엄마가 왜 칼을 무서워하는지 말해주지 않는다. 6 외할아버지는 목에서부터 발끝까지 흰 천으로 몸이 꽁꽁 둘러져 있었다. 그가 혼자 말도 없이 스스로 생을 마감하셨을 때 네 자식 중 이모를 빼고는 아무도 울지 않았다. 이모만 자꾸 울었다. 7 엄마는 맨발로 땅을 밟으면 안도감이 느껴진다고 했다. 군인이셨던 아빠가 술에 취해 매를 들면 한 밤중에서도 집을 뛰쳐나와야 했다고 했다. 신발을 챙길 틈도 없이 맨발로 뜀박질을 하며 쿵쿵 밟는 바닥은 시원하고 뜨거웠는데 그건 더이상 아프지 않다는 뜻이었다고 했다. 엄마는 지금도 종종 신발을 벗어 손에 달랑달랑 걸치고는 맨발로 길을 걷는다.
